Alla Prima Oil Paintings for July

Yellow Miniature Roses, 4"x6" Oil on Linen I hope you have had a great summer. I've started teaching again and have been working hard at sneaking in painting time. This painting of yellow roses is my first alla prima oil painting. Having only a few minutes here and there allowed for painting, my still life props tend to go bad before I get a chance to finish a painting. I thought this was the perfect time to practice a painting in only a few minutes. This one I gave myself fifteen minutes to paint. Later I will post some that took me about thirty minutes. I had so much fun, that I know I will try it again. Comice Pear with Silver Cup, 5"x7" Oil on Linen sold This one and the one below are a different story. I have been working on them for about a week, off and on. They are finally done and I feel pretty pleased with them. The pears are from back yard, from a pear tree my dad planted years ago. This year we got a few more pears that in the past. Comice P...

Miniature Paintings

Peonies and Roses Still Life 6"x8" Oil on Linen Panel Sold Plum Still Life 3"x3" Oil on Linen Panel Click Here to Bid Blue and White Rice Bowl Still Life 2 1/2"x3" Oil on Linen Panel Click Here to Bid I needed to cut one of my larger linen panels to fit a frame I had gotten (I know, that’s a bit backwards, but I love the frame). Well, I had leftover pieces of linen panel and this week I did a couple of paintings on them; the one of the bowl and the one of the plum above. I had so much fun that I cut a larger linen panel into smaller pieces to do more mini- miniature paintings. It is a blast and feels so-not-stressful. I also worked on a few larger pieces that are considered miniature to many artists, but to me they are pretty large. One is that of the flowers, which I finished with the help of artists friends like Carla Anglada , Tracey Harris, and Juan Jr. Ramirez, who were so gracious to give me advice on painting white flowers. They are great mas...

Confession: My Greatest Weakness

Pear Still Life, III 4”x6” Oil on Linen Panel Sold Still Life of Pear Half, 6”x6” Oil on Linen Panel SOLD Peony Still Life, III 6”x8” Oil on Linen Panel SOLD Mango Still Life, 4”x6” Oil on Linen Panel NFS I have been painting up a storm. Not always a good storm, but I’ve worked out a few problems. The top paintings are of a pear. It shows what a difference a background makes. I love that blue background on the first. It is the color that I painted my laundry room. The painting of the pear half I found to be very difficult. I just couldn’t get the right colors for the meat of the pear. They were both still fun to paint. The peony is one that I purchased from A Date with Iris (great flowers and art; you should visit). I love peonies, but I do find them challenging to paint. I love how the blue background came out on this one. Okay, so now to my weakness. I have many, starting with chocolate, but by far my greatest is MANGO. I am very allergic to this oh so very delicious treat, bu...

I hope you come by to see my work and the work of other Oklahoma Artists. It will be absolutely fantastic. I have had a great year teaching. There were lots of tears, for hard and happy times, but through it all I am thankful for having the chance to teach art. I got a wonderful note from a student saying that I was inspirational to him and that he was thankful that I gave him the opportunity to see he had great talent in art. WOW! It was all worth it and I look forward to other days when I...

I AM AN ARTIST!

Rembrandt Tulips in Glass Vase, Oil on Linen Panel 5"x7" SOLD So, when can an artist call themselves an artist? Is when they draw the first picture and someone else recognizes what it is? Is it when they are called "artist" by their peers? Is it when they’ve developed “their own” style? Or maybe when they have a “real” studio? How about when they sell their first artwork; or better yet, when they have their first sold out solo exhibit, in New York, Venice, Florence, or Paris? I don’t think it’s the art degree that gives someone the right to call themselves an artist, but then what do I know? I have never really called myself an artist out loud. I’ve called myself a decorative painter, a muralist, a ceramicist, a jewelry maker, and even an art teacher. So, lately I was wondering, "How old will I be when I can call myself an artist?" After days of asking my soul a million questions, I came to a conclusion: I’ve been an artist since the day I was born. This ...
